Hummingbird Food

hummingbird feeder

Well, not technically something the Dunlop Brothers would cook and eat themselves, we have been making Hummingbird Food for our friends the hummingbirds for many years.  When we first started to feed them, we were told that we should buy Hummingbird Food.  What a scam!

Hummingbird Food is a simple syrup made of 4 parts water to 1 part sugar.

The key to successful feeding of the birds is to change the food every couple of weeks and to clean the feeder as well.  Hummingbirds are very sensitive birds and can get sick from mould which can grow in the feeding holes and crevices in the feeder.  The red colouring on most feeders is all you need to attract the birds.  There is no need to add red food colouring to the food.

Hummingbird at the Feeder

Hummingbirds are fun to watch and very territorial, scaring away much larger birds that they think might be after their food.

Enjoy the show!

Yellow Jackets Pestering You When You are Dining Al Fresco?
The same simple syrup is a great bait to use in yellow jacket traps, for those pesky wasps that come around in August.
