In a large frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the pears and apples. Cook, gently turning fruit until tender, 8 - 10 minutes. Stir in the brown sugar and increase the heat. Cook for 3 more minutes. Remove from the heat. |

Stir in the bread and raisins. |

| Grease a 9 inch round casserole dish. Add the bread and fruit mixture. |

In a separate bowl, mix together the cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla and spices using a whisk or fork. Pour over the bread mixture and stir gently to mix. Let it stand at least 45 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the liquid mixture. You may need to gently push down the bread into the liquid so that all of it is covered. |

Bake in a preheated 350 deg F oven for 50 - 60 minutes or until the edges of the bread are starting to brown, the pudding is starting to puff in the centre. A butter knife inserted in the centre should come out clean. |

| Serve warm or at room temperature with ice cream or whipped cream. |
