Grown-Up Sugar Cookies

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup butter (at room temperature)
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 Large egg
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- sugar for dipping
Directions
| Combine the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt. | |
| If the butter is not at room temperature, microwave it for 1 minute at the lowest setting. If it is still a little hard, continue to microwave at 10 seconds at the lowest setting, until it is room temperature soft. | |
| Cream together the butter and shortening. Gradually add the brown sugar, then white sugar until smooth. Blend in the egg and vanilla | |

Stir in the dry ingredients until well combined  | |

Use a teaspoon to get enough dough. Then shape into 1 inch balls. I like to roll a cookie sheet worth of balls (12) at a time  | |

Roll each ball in white sugar. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.  | |

Using your pointer finger and middle finger, gently push down a little on the cookie  | |
|
Bake at 375 deg F (convection oven) or 400 deg F (regular oven) for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly golden. Cool on parchment paper or cookie rack. These cookies keep well for several weeks  | |
